According to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the term "idée fixe" was coined by French composer Hector Berlioz in 1830, who used it to describe the principal theme of his Symphonie fantastique. That reference goes on to say that, at about the same time, French novelist Honore de Balzac used "idée fixe" in Gobseck to describe an obsessive idea. By 1836, Balzac's more generalized use of the term had carried over into English, where "idée fixe" was embraced as a clinical and literary term for a persistent preoccupation or delusional idea that dominates a person's mind. Nowadays "idée fixe" is also applied to milder and more pedestrian obsessions.

Love Joe. Greatest podcast and I know he doesn’t read the comments here but the first 30 minutes of the Schilling episode is so filled with one sided critiques of the police by a fighter who posts police videos and is now a police expert??? Schilling is woefully uninformed and really adds nothing to the discussion other than his opinion. Maybe he should give his opinions on quantum mechanics next. Probably an expert on that too.

I just noticed a string of awful reviews so I’m here to add positivity since I listen regularly and think Kudos are deserved. My husband and I have listened to this podcast for a couple years, during the day and night, and we love it. We put on a podcast every evening to fall asleep to and we usually choose “re-runs” of this one. We appreciate hearing conversation that won’t appeal to only liberal or only conservative views. It is a compilation of knowledge that leads to changing views, depending on the topic, offers listeners a chance for growth and leads to knowledge being gained. Joe seems like a smart man and is always willing to not only learn from his guests but also teaches them during his interviews. It has sparked great discussions in our relationship as well as conversations among our peers. We are grateful to have found this show!
