Amanda Cook was 14 when she decided to go to the fair with her family. Just fifteen minutes from home in the Manitoba district of Canada. She checked in with her father throughout the day, getting money for games. He last remembered seeing her around 6:60-7pm. But then nothing, the family searched for her. They called the RCMP. Four days later her body was found, near the grounds, mostly nude. She had been beaten to death. Months later a suspect was charged and tried. In 1988, 16-year-old David Brom murdered all family members in his home, burying an ax into each one of them in Rochester Minnesota. For which, he received four life sentences. However, in 2023, legislative changes allowed for the possibility of parole early due to his age at the time of sentencing. On July 29th 2025, 53 year David was released into a work released program in nearby Twin Cities. Twenty-one-year-old Grace Millane wanted to go on a solo trip during her gap year. She had graduated with her Bachelor's Degree, feeling accomplished and excited, and planned her trip. First landing in South Africa, then moved on to New Zealand. A country touted for its safety, it's here that Grace stops adding posts to social media and loses contact with family. On the eve of her 22nd birthday, she replies to none of the families calls or messages. Immediately, they know, something has gone wrong. They notify New Zealand Police and the investigation is underway. Unfortunately it is already too late and Grace is gone. In such a safe place, Grace is murdered. In the 1960's in Scotland a man killed three women. All of them came from the Barrowland Ballroom, they were all mothers, and all menstruating. They were beaten, then strangled. The last victim had a bite mark on her arm. While this suggested a pattern of escalation. Instead the killing stopped. The man disappeared and the cases have remained unsolved. This months MMIW cases hail once again out of Canada. When looking for a reference, the CBC houses a plethora of information. After looking through the list, I got lost on where to start. Genene Jones always thought she was better than others. When she became an LVN she administered ordered however she saw fit, assuming she knew what was best. In a PICU she was present for more than half of the deaths that occurred in just over a year. After being released from the hospital, her reign of terror simply went on to the children who entered her clinic. Erick started in Texas. After a stint in juvi, he absconded up to Seattle to be with his dad. Bringing his girlfriend, who was pregnant with their first son at the time. He waited out the law until his record was expunged and he was free to move around again. The streets were familiar and he ran them under his fathers protection. Still he didn't manage to stay away from the law. Multiple run-ins and short sentences plagued his life, culminating in a second degree murder charge. Fred West was a happy child, but after a motorcycle accident in his teens, became a different person. His true terrifying nature didn't come to fruition until his life partner Rose came into the picture. A child of abuse and mental health issues Rose had the propensity for torture. Her sexual appetite barely satiated with Fred. Together the pair prowled for the vulnerable, when challenged they killed their own. Finally stopped after decades and a dozen murders. In 1821 the world Penitentiary comes in. A place for those who have committed crimes to be and seek reflection and penance. The original spoke and wheel design housed indoor plumbing from its inception. The addition of other buildings changing its landscape, design, and overall workings. Like other prisons, overcrowding plagued the system quickly. Drugs were introduced and idle hands led to disdain and riots. Still the location was active for over 141 years before its decay and decline were too much and the door were shut. This month is a multiple case month. Women, predominantly from the Navajo Nation go missing or are murdered. Many of the cases remain unsolved to this day. The last case is just as heartbreaking, Jamie Yazzie is killed by her then boyfriend following an argument, found just seven miles from the house she was living. But it takes years before she is found and news to the family is either delayed or delivered by the media instead of law enforcement. Their own lawyer can't get any updates either, frustrating everyone involved, but they persevered and justice is eventually served. Andrea Yates was a woman who suffered from mental illness throughout her adult life. Her religious mentor exacerbating her condition through his preaching. She married and the couple had five children together, but as the numbers increased, her mental health diminished. Committing several self-harm events, speaking of hearing voices and wanting to hurt her children but trying to end her own life instead. In the end, all the interventions aren't enough to save her five children. She is unattended for 60 minutes and in that time, ends the life of all of her children before calling for help. On April 19th, 1995, two years after Waco. A truck bomb was set off next to the Alfred P. Murrah building. The act of domestic terrorism claimed 168 lives, while injuring 800. The response was swift, and with a little bit of luck, the main individual, who drove the truck to its location, was placed in jail on unrelated charges within hours of the bomb detonating. The two men were charged quickly, along with a man who had knowledge of the impending attack and failed to notify anybody. The Oregon State Penitentiary, OSP, started construction in the late 1800's. It has grown into the concrete monster that it is today. Starting on the outskirts of the town, Salem grew around it. The penitentiary was known for it's violence, overcrowding, and corruption for decades. It is the center of a high profile, yet little known hit on an employee within the Oregon Department of Corrections, who meant to shed light on the corruption. Emily Pike was just 14 years old when she was murdered. Her childhood looked bright, she was a happy child, then one event and her life was never the same. After being moved into a group home, she was isolated from family. Her mental health declined and she attempted suicide on multiple occasions. In 1992, John Martin Crawford targeted indigenous women who were in sex work. He brutalized them and then killed them, dumping them around the same location. But years prior, 19-year-old John had done the same to another woman. Pleading to manslaughter instead of murder. He was able to rejoin society and continue his merciless actions against women. He killed Shelley Napope, Eva Taysup, and Calinda Waterhen before being brought to justice. Their names rarely brought up in the news. Eric Edgar Cooke was born and raised in Perth, Australia. His family despised him from birth due to his cleft lip. He became a quiet boy and awkward teen. He did things to fit in, but that often including illegal activities. He was known as a petty thief early on. He got married and had numerous children, while he worked, he also continued his life of crime. Something that his wife accepted. But then his small crimes escalated to rape and assault. Even continuing to escalate until he murdered multiple people. He was caught after attempting to retrieve a rifle he'd hidden in bushes. John Christie, a hysterical hypochondriac. Hated women and used his knowledge of gas to lure multiple women in and end their lives. He couldn't perform in the bedroom without violence, resulting in his need to pick up prostitutes to feed his appetite. After bodies were found in his apartment, he didn't deny killing them. Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind had her whole life ahead of her. She was pregnant with her first child, getting ready to move in with her long-time partner. Always willing to lend a helping hand. Auburn prison became the first "prison for profit" . Through use of inmate labor and local contracts. The inmates made no money from this labor, it all went to the prison and those who ran it. The striped uniform and solitary confinement were created here as well. This silent prison, was a havoc on the mental health of those who found themselves living in it. George Eric Marquart, a man without a high school degree became the first to produce street Fentanyl. He had a high IQ, evident in school. But he found school boring and ridiculous.
