Today, we cross a name off every radio aficionado's interview bucket list: Erin Davis. Erin hosted radio in Toronto for more than 30 years, from the 80's all the way to 2016. Most of that time was spent at the venerable CHFI.There's a lot to talk about when it comes to Erin's career, and she's happy to share. Stories of personal and career growth, and how she developed her hosting skills. The mistakes she made along the way. The co-hosts she had the best and worst chemistry with, what she found so special about radio, the decline she's seen since the turn of the century, and of course, the devastating change that prompted her to leave radio behind.Since 2016, Erin has expanded her resume in a number of ways. Most notable, though, are her book Mourning Has Broken, and her two podcasts- Drift with Erin Davis and the G and F Podcast. G and F is co-hosted by Erin and her longtime friend and fellow voice talent, Lisa Brandt. Andrew "Hustler" Paterson is the owner of Winnipeg Sports Talk. TSN 1290 abandoned the Sports Radio format back in February 2021, and since then, he and his producer Michael Remis have filled the gap, putting out high-quality daily sports content for the people of Winnipeg to enjoy.Hustler started in radio with a Saturday sports show on CFEQ 107.1 the Freak, and proceeded to build his brand through stints at the Winnipeg Free Press and CJOB. This means he was around for the return of the Winnipeg Jets to the NHL in 2011, and we talk about everything that meant for the Winnipeg sports community. We also the rise and demise of TSN 1290, the former major sports radio broadcast in Winnipeg. However, the note-taking begins when you hear what Hustler did AFTER the station went off the air.We also talk about how he chooses his subject matter, and how much he can talk about- between NHL, MLB, NFL, CFL and everything else Winnipeg sports fans are interested in, the content well is never truly dry.You can connect with Winnipeg Sports Talk here. Subscribe to the YouTube Channel hereThanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. Make him the imaging voice for your radio station by contacting him through his website.Megatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. Also we added the Sound Off Podcast to the The Open Podcast Prefix Project (OP3) A free and open-source podcast prefix analytics service committed to open data and listener privacy. You can be a nosey parker by checking out our downloads here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... And us roasting a bunch of jerks! Welcome to the 8th annual Very Terry Christmas. If it's your first time, the Very Terry Christmas is a special episode where Matt is joined by Terry Dimonte, his longtime pal, to get into the holiday spirit and "reminisce" (i.e. complain) about the year's goings-on.Fair warning: this episode is tagged as Explicit already, but the guys go a little overboard. As Matt says in the intro, do not listen to this episode if your little elves or Mrs. Claus are around! Otherwise, grab some egg nog (with or without rum), settle in by the fire, and enjoy. We made mention of Terry's talk with the Prime Minister... you can watch it here. Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Mary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the voice of your radio station.Megatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Jason Dixon has been with Sirius XM since 2015. How he got there is a sum of all the parts that come before that. An internship at 970 WFLA after hearing about it in a TV and radio class, a transition to the Power Pig where he shares a number of fun stories, launching what would become WDAE, followed by 8 years at the Tampa Bay Lightning. Jason later had stints in North Carolina and Detroit. In this episode you will hear stories from all these stops; which means you will hear some stories from inside the Tampa Bay Lightning who had a remarkable team throughout the early 2000's, winning a Stanley Cup in 2004.We timed the release of this episode with the launch of the new Sirius App. Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice.

Have you ever thought to yourself, "I'd love to own a radio station"? I know there was a point where I did. If you've ever had that feeling, or still do, today's guest Paul Larsen is the man to talk to.I've been wanting to have Paul on the podcast for years, ever since he bought 103.9 The Lake in Kelowna, B.C. in 2021. Today, he's in the process of selling the station to Pattison. But the same question has been on my mind for nearly three years now: Why on earth would anyone buy a radio station in the middle of the pandemic?Thankfully, Paul answers my question gracefully, as well as diving into his lengthy radio career and how exactly he got into purchasing radio stations. He also offers up some fun stories from throughout the years, and provides something extra valuable for those in the ownership business: a playbook for the future of radio.A transcription of the episode is here.
Do you remember last Spring, when the media was all abuzz about AI Ashley, the first-ever artificial intelligence radio DJ? If so, you might remember the name Alpha Media. They're the ones who help bring her to life. (AI Ashley is Ashley “Z” Elzinga)Phil Becker is the Executive Vice President of Content at Alpha Media, and our guest today. He has a hand in the programming and content efforts of over 200 radio stations across America, and quite honestly, he's been on my list of potential podcast guests for years. Even before AI Ashley, his speaking points at conferences always fascinated me, as did his path through the radio industry. In this episode, Phil and I chat about his unorthodox career path, the unique decisions that led him to it, and of course, the future and AI's prospective role in it. When AI Ashley was released last year, myself and many others speculated about what it could mean for the future of radio. We're still waiting to see how that turns out in the long run, but for now, Phil provides some excellent ideas of what we might be able to expect. If you're curious about what Alpha Media is up to now, or want to work with them, you can visit their website here.A transcription of this episode can be found here. Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.Megatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Terry Dimonte and Ted Bird are Montreal radio legends who started a podcast two years ago after Terry was unceremoniously retired from his morning radio job at CHOM-FM. Ted continues his morning show at Evanov's Lite 106.7 which serves the West Island. The podcast started as a one season affair that is now in its 6th season featuring amazing guests like Brice Hills and Mitch Garber. These names may mean nothing to you but I know you have heard of Just for Laughs and the Seattle Kraken - so these episodes are for you. The show brings everything amazing that comes with their humour and awesome interviews. In this episode you will hear all about their podcast experience (so far), why it works and why it breaks a number of the conventional podcast rules. There are a number of episodes with Terry you can scroll back and listen to. We also had an epic session with Ted Bird and one with Geoff Allan who is the voiceover talent on the show.
It's been 3 and a half years since we have had Steve on the show. The last time I spoke to him, we were trying to figure out how morning shows were going to do what they do everyday... but from home. We pick up where we left off with my first question, "Are we back to Normal?" (As if there was any normal to go to back to)In this episode, Steve and I discuss how his coaching business evolved through the pandemic with less travel but more meetings, morning show dynamics, and I learn thar benchmarks on a show are as important as ever. We also spent a fair bit of time on mentorship and why Steve has a personal policy of always helping others regardless of personal gain.I also made reference to the Podcast Superfriends episode with Jay Nachlis from Coleman Insights. It's Halloween and way back in the 90's the station I used to work for had this thing called the Howler. It was an out of control good time featuring 5000 people and a band and some beer. Actually a lot of beer. This week I got back together with my old afternoon friend Jake Daniels and we just riffed on all the good times we used to have on air. Our show was always a contrast to the noise going on around us. We didn't need too much else in a show other than admitting we were coming in with nothing and would finish the show with a joke. It's a good day to do radio if you are interested in life.In this episode you will hear Jake's infamous story with Nazareth, how we enjoyed watching Nickelback's ascension into stardom, Woodstock '99 (Jake was there), How Jake still hates country music and Metallica, hates soccer but loves Wrexham, and he shares medical advice and the benefits of going vegan. (Jake is a fan of Rick Simpson's Oil... you can google the rest)Anyhow - we have only spoken a handful of times in the last 20 years but as it is with old friends - you pick up where you left off. There is a video version of the show here - this was recorded live to video.Back in 2018, I had Jake on the show for an epic - Episode 100. Check it out here. Jake also mention he is looking for radio and broadcast work in Edmonton. You can contact him here. A transcription of this episode can be found here.
Erin Trafford is a co-founder of Story Studio Network, a full service content branding and podcast experience for brands she co-founded with her dad Dave Trafford, who is a radio mainstay in the Greater Toronto Area, and a regular contributor on Newstalk 1010 up until July when layoffs occured. Erin has the unique experience of growing up with a parent in broadcasting, which means you have been immersed in radio (from the inside) all your life. Erin's radio career started with an internship at CJAD in Montreal, helping to launch what is now the Moose in North Bay, working as a reporter for Global TV in Halifax, before finally co-founding her company. In this episode, you will hear Erin's pathway from broadcast to podcast, what she believes we can do to fix Canadian Media for the better, and why your business should be podcasting. This episode also marks a change in the way we distribute content. We will be adding in the raw YouTube recording of our conversation instead of a simple audiogram post to YouTube. Jennifer-Lee Gunson is the owner of J-Pod Creations which is a Vancouver based company specializing in branded podcasting. Before Jennifer got started in radio, she was an actor. She later enrolled at BCIT, found her way to Astral owned The Bear, which has now been shifted to the Bounce cluster of Bell properties. She returned to Vancouver after a stint in Prince George and took to the air (literally) doing traffic for CKNW and later Canadian Traffic Network which is where you can hear her today. She is also the host of a few podcasts at her company, including the ever-popular HAVAN podcast "Measure Twice, Cut Once" which is a branded podcast for the Homebuilders Association of Vancouver. In this episode, you will hear how she got her start in radio, survived the pandemic, and started her company. Best of all, she shares what she learned in radio and how it applies to making great on demand audio.A Transcription of this episode is available here. This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.Megatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Aiden Wolf joins me to shares tips for making it big on YouTube. Over the last few years, podcasters have been trickling onto YouTube as it has proven effective for discovery. However, this does not make podcasters, effective YouTubers. In this episode you will hear Aiden talk about his journey in radio, from morning show host to voiceover artist. But it was his microphone reviews, and unboxings that garnered him a true YouTube audience. YouTube's algorithm is based on the viewer's profile, which is created by analyzing their viewing history and interests. Content creators should focus on creating content that viewers want to watch, as the algorithm will serve their content to viewers who are interested in their niche. All this is rather benign for podcasters who will experience confusion between podcasting and YouTube, and how it affects podcasters' strategies. Aiden suggests podcasters create content for different platforms and respect their viewers' preferences to maximize reach and engagement. We also explored creating short-form content (e.g., YouTube shorts) to appeal to a broader audience and increase views, with a guarantee of 100-fold views compared to audiograms, and how to make sure that your podcast appears on YouTube Music in the near future.A Transcription is available here.
The title to this episode was going to be "Cut the Bullshit" which was the name of the Facebook group Jeremy founded a number of years back. Jeremy is a podcast marketer and sherpa who helps brands launch and grow their shows. He acknowledges brightly that every show is different and will have a unique path. The best thing you can do for yourself is register for his newsletter, Creative Wayfinding. Often when I read it, I find it is more about perspective than tips and tricks. In this episode you will hear Jeremy's insights on developing a focused approach to podcast marketing and what he learned from discovering online business opportunities through Pat Flynn and Amy Porterfield. Also why your podcast should be listenable, with no noticeable audio issues. And is Podcasting crowded? Compared to other mediums, no. Also tips on using (or not using) YouTube and making Newsletters that matter. Also given that Jeremy is in Barcelona, Matt asked about what it is like working from Europe.A Transcription of this episode is available here. This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We also discussed why her company created Co-Host which is a podcast analytics and audience insights platform built for brands, and why attribution is a good thing. We also spoke about which metrics are important and share some tips about podcast promotion. Also why podcast ratings and reviews help, (it's not the algorithm) and why Zoom is a horrible place to record your podcast. Finally, who pulled the fire alarm at Podcast Movement?A Transcription of this episode is available here.
For natives of Kelowna, B.C., Stephen Keppler requires no introduction. But on the off chance you're not from around there, Stephen is the morning drive host at Move 101.5 in Kelowna, one of the largest radio shows in B.C.Morning show hosts nowadays have a bit of a reputation for making easy content- lots of audience text and phone lines, asking questions like "What's your worst concert experience? Call in and let us know," so on and so forth. This summer, though, things haven't been quite so easy for Stephen. If you've been watching the news, you'll have heard of the disastrous forest fires wrecking the West Coast for the last few months. It just so happens that keeping people informed about, and safe from, those fires has become a huge part of Stephen's job.Stephen talks to us about his humble origins as a radio-loving kid in Edmonton, his roles on morning shows at a huge number of large radio stations in Western Canada, and of course, what it was like helping people avoid those raging fires. For more of Stephen, listen in to Move 101.5 in the morning if you're in the Kelowna area. If not, you can listen online here! You can also connect with Stephen on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. If you do, you should also follow the Instagram page for his segment called Some Good News, which (as the name implies) focuses on bringing you news stories that might actually make your day a little better.A Transcription of this episode is available here.
Buzz Bishop has long been a name I have been familiar with in Canadian radio, but only last week did I get a chance to connect with him for the first time. A mainstay at Z95, Crave and Virgin 95.3, he segued to Calgary in 2009 where he took up the Top 40 cause at Amp 90.3, before crossing the hall to work at XL103. In recent weeks, he has been joined with Samantha Stevens who is no stranger to Calgary, having worked there twice before. What I really like about Buzz is his passion for radio AND technology. He hosted a syndicated feature called CyberBuzz which aired on a number of stations across North America. You may also know him from doing the Canadian Hot 20. He was also an early adopter of websites and later blogs when they peaked in the early 2010's. In this episode you'll hear us talk about radio adventures, some of the greatest programmers, some of the greatest promotions, and Buzz shares some relevant tactics for repurposing content in 2023.A Transcription of this episode is available here.
Sean Ross is back to talk about radio and records. He answers my burning question: What happened to the hits? We also talked about the lost factor, whether "Join the Conversation" radio has run its course, and those songs of summer. Sue Haas is an experienced media executive, having worked on a wide variety of teams and projects. She was at Blue Ant Media for over 12 years, managing sales operations as a director and digital media as VP and later SVP. This experience has made her a good fit for her new position as President and COO at NLogic, a company providing audience and commercial analysis tools for the TV and radio broadcast industry, media agencies and more. In this episode, Sue talks about the strategies behind multi-platform content distribution, which content should go on which platform and why and the new technologies that are being introduced in the creative world. These things may seem technical and only interesting for the technology ‘geeks’, but this data is important because it's all for you. This information helps the media makers make the media you all want and enjoy! Our thanks to NLogic for their never ending support of our show. Josie Fenech has this awesome thing going where she has been apart of a fantastic Ottawa radio story. Hot 89.9 went on the air in 2003 and shortly after Josie joined the station on evenings and later joining the morning show where she was a fixture until 2019. Today she is the National Talent Director for Stingray and their 101 radio stations. We spoke about her career, she caught me up on the new challenges facing CHR radio, how playlists in compiled and what she looks for in a radio demo.I met Josie for the first time at Radio Days North America which is one of the rare radio get-togethers left on the continent. (The other being Morning Show Boot Camp) One of the overriding themes at the conference was the desire for feedback. She provides a number of tips and tricks to get some where you can get some.A Transcription of this episode is available here.
Sam Sethi is setting out on his biggest adventure yet. The host of Podnews Weekly Review and former programmer at Windows and Netscape, is launching Podfans; part of a new wave of podcast apps you can find here on the Podnews website.Over the last few years, podcast shows like Podnews, Pocasting 2.0 with Adam Curry and Dave Jones, and shortly after The New Media Show with Rob Greenlee and Todd Cochrane, began to talk about ways to improve the technology involved with podcast delivery. Think of things like sending money straight to the host or evenly amongst hosts, being able to follow along with captions, listening live when the show goes live, listening to podcasts created in your neighbourhood, and chapter markers so you don't have to scan every 15 or seconds for the part of the show you are looking for.In this episode you will hear about Sam's time at Netscape and Windows, how he got involved in meeting James Cridland and devising the Podcast Weekly Review, and what exactly goes into building a podcast app like Podfans, and why he wanted to ensure that there was a desktop component to it. You can register for Podfans here. A transcript of this episode is available here This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Lauren Passell is the owner of Tink Media. Her experience in Public Relations . gives her a unique perspective. But simply put, podcasting is public relations. Everything from getting the guest, preparing the show, and marketing and promoting the show is what a great PR firm executes; all in the name of messaging and creating audience awareness. Lauren along with Arielle Nissenblatt, embarked on podcasting's ultimate PR campaign with last April with the "Adopt-a-Listener" podcast initiative to recruit more people to connect with podcasts.I was speaking with lauren about podcast marketing – it felt very therapeutic hear someone with an equal disdain for wasting money on social media ad spending and the need to upgrade our podcast artwork.Lauren offers free podcast marketing suggestions in her newsletters that you can find here:Podcast The NewsletterPodcast Marketing Magic Lauren and I also spoke at length about promos swaps. Tink Media has a place where you can find some people to do a promo swap with. You can also do a little exploration with your podcast neighbourhood by using Rephonic's cool tool.
Bryan Goldmark heads up Sales at the Locked On Podcast Network. The Network was founded in 2016 by Utah Jazz radio announcer David Locke and sold in 2021 to Tegna. Today it is home to over 200 podcasts and 25 million listeners who want to enjoy a daily fix from a podcast about their favourite team in the NHL, NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, and College Football. In this episode you will hear all about Bryan's radio experiences. (Spoiler: His dad worked in Radio at stations like WRKO and Hot 97 in Miami, while Bryan got a crash course in radio sales at 1010 WINS). Bryan will share what it takes to join Locked On as a content creator, how often you'll need to produce content, and how good you'll need to be. One of the thing I found very interesting is how much Locked On feels like one big on demand sports radio station.A transcript of this episode is comingThis show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
