Join mathematician Professor Hannah Fry and science creator Michael Stevens (Vsauce) as they dig into the weird scientific questions that often go unexplored.
Welcome to The Rest Is Science, a show that sits in the fascinating space between what we think we know, and what we actually know. Why do we assume we understand things like time, randomness, or even gravity? Once you start questioning these familiar ideas, reality becomes astonishingly strange and completely fragile.
Whether you're a lifelong science fan or just naturally curious, The Rest Is Science will change your perception of reality, and prove that the biggest questions are always the most fun.
Really enjoying the podcast and appreciate them exploring different ways of thinking about problems

I have been a fan of Vsauce for many years now, and I found this podcast by surprise. Michael and Hannah perfectly balance information and entertainment to create this truly worthwhile podcast, even for someone who thinks they usually drag on. I truly canβt get enough, thank you for the bi-weekly episodes! (And yes, we know theyβre not the same thing!)

So cool! Can you do one about navigation by migrating birds, sea turtles, whales etc that travel the world?

Just listened to How Big is a Piece of Chocolate and I loved the discussion on religion vs science at the end. Thank you so much for that kind take! Iβd love for you to do a whole episode on the topic. Thereβs far too much division out there, and I think your voices would be a valuable addition to the discussion.

a 'A Rest Is...' podcast that incites awe! (the others are good but history, politics, spies get depressing). thank you!!!!

They both say βlikeβ a lot. Hannah at least once every sentence. Itβs quite annoying

I've been a fan of both of these people for a long time (more H than M I guess). For Hanna, following the devastating disintegration of original Curious Cases with Adam Rutherford, it's a huge step up from the unmentionable irritation of the shell of a show that is the current iteration of Curious Cases (oh for goodness sake just put that show out of its misery!). The back and forth with Michael is good. There is one problem however. Their knowledge and comfort zones are too similar. Too many cases of asking each other when it's perfectly clear that both know the answer and 100x more. The thing that made it work so well with Hannah and Adam is that because their fields of expertise was so complementary, they could sound like they surprised each other. (Yes I know there was a script, but still- it felt genuine). I'm not sure what they can do about that in this pairing.

Amazing concept, has the potential to be good but as it stands, most of the episodes are hard to listen to as they tend to show off items, that if you have no idea what theyβre talking about can be hard to follow along with and imagine. Also some of the topics discussed are too complicated and complex for a casual listen driving. I was expecting this to be a podcast around things the everyday person knows of and can relate too, not mathematical numbers and equations. Really enjoy Hannah and enjoy some of her other works so nothing against the presenters themselves. More so the actual structure of the pod.

Iβve hoovered up at least half of the episodes in about 4 days. I think people who like Radiolab or Ologies will love it. The subjects they cover are interesting and I find the tangents (Vsauce style) fascinating. Michaelβs effervescent and Hannahβs more considered personality, and their respective breadth and depth of knowledge, make every conversation fun to listen in on.

lots of reviews are lowkey being xenophobic with the annoyance of michaelβs americen accent. i mostly listen on youtube but was shocked seeing the amount of people hating. if hannah thinks hes suitable then deal with it. i think the episodes are thought provoking and very entertaining. if youβre only leaving a bad review because you think american people are annoying keep it to yourself. these are real people.

Itβs not engaging at all & lacks focus. Hannah is usually a good listen but the American guy is so irritating and off putting. Listen to Curious Cases on BBC Sounds for a much better alternative or better still the science content of In Our Time (also on BBC Sounds)

Amazing podcast with two highly intelligent people, it was so interesting that I couldnβt fall asleep without finishing it! I would recommend to all the nerds out there, like me, who like two polar opposites, a British female and an American male, working together to produce science facts for all the public in harmony! Donβt bother looking through all the hate comments/reviews (like I did) because theyβre narcissistic and just plain dumb, if you have nothing nice to say, then just donβt bother even mentioning it. Either way, Hannah and Michael are two wonderful people and I hope they collaborate on more projects/podcasts in the future!

This podcast is impossible to listen to because of the endless adverts. Thereβs more ad time than podcast time. Please fix it, I canβt even make it through the first episode

two actual legends

Such a shame that what promised to be my favourite of the βThe Rest Isβ¦β podcasts has, for me, fallen flat. At the moment, the podcast seems to be struggling to work out what it actually is, as well as who it is aimed at. Topics are either dealt with at such a superficial level that anyone with a science background is likely to switch off, yet at the same time it often moves into areas with too little explanation for listeners without prior knowledge. The result is a very odd mix, with no real middle ground. What I find most bizarre is that there is very little actual science. A recent episode on the trolley problem, for example, sits firmly within the realm of moral philosophy. While there are empirical studies in the social sciences that touch on related questions, the topic isnβt really one that Iβd expect in a podcast supposedly about science. Similarly, the episode exploring whether ice should be classified as a mineral, and whether water could therefore be described as lava, is an interesting angle. However, ending the discussion with the statement that βwater is lavaβ is not accurate in any meaningful scientific sense, even if one can follow the logic used to arrive at that conclusion. That is not science, but philosophy. On the plus side, Prof Hannah Fry is a legend as always.

Leave Michael alone - why the hate in the reviews. He so engaging and enjoyable to listen to. Great communicator

Iβd gladly pay for this podcast but I refuse to listen to it with ads. Such a waste

These two know how to have some fun while going back back-and-forth on very interesting scientific facts and insights. Michael is just hilarious and Hannah keeps him in check while delivering astute counter points and insights. While I was expecting this to be a more basic science podcast, there are deeper insights and understandings that help me put together the bigger picture. Additionally, this podcast is unconventional and that itβs more of a dialogue and less of a structured format, which I greatly enjoy. Keep up the excellent quality episodes!

I love love love this podcasts and the host are amazing, they make learning about anything so interesting and they explain subjects in a way that is very easy to understand. They have great chemistry and you can tell they care about the subject.
