Everything people and workforce—recruiting, marketing, technology, talent management, and workforce economics—delivered with biting sarcasm and unapologetic snark. Industry misfits Chad Sowash and Joel Cheesman bring their no-holds-barred opinions to dissect news, trends, and the occasional dumpster fire. If you’re a hiring company, staffing firm, or vendor looking for insights (and a thick skin), these two won’t just tell you what’s happening—they’ll tell you why you’re probably doing it wrong. Buckle up, buttercup.
For most podcasters and bloggers, the weeks leading up to the HR Tech Conference are akin to a bucket o’ crickets. Not much to say. But Chad & Cheese aren’t slowing down. This week, Google embraces military veterans (and Google’s minions cheer!), Recruitology loves your local newspaper and Amazon has apparently unleashed an army of tweeting zombies declaring loyalty and love to the company’s warehouse jobs. Get ya’ popcorn and visit our sponsors: Sovren, JobAdX and America’s Job Exchange.
On this Uncommon.co exclusive, the boys interview Smashfly's VP of Marketing, Josh Zywien (pronounced "zwayne") to cover a broad spectrum of topics, including Zywien's opinion on chatbots, how job boards are doing in Google's World and the next big thing. Enjoy!
It’s The Shred – a mini-Chad and Cheese bite of Breaking News — This is Chad Sowash The Shred is brought to you by The Judge Group… Judge has over 48 years of experience and success in recruiting all kinds of talent – say you need IT or maybe even Healthcare talent. Well it sounds like you need to visit Judge.com and tell them Chad & Cheese sent you. On to the NEWS.. Google launches job search for transitioning military veterans For any enterprise company, job board, or staffing agency already using Google’s Cloud Talent Solution, SURPRISE this feature is live on your site right now. Transitioning service personnel can enter their U.S. military occupational code into the job search bar and receive targeted job search results. That’s right, not a different search bar, no special handshakes necessary it’s LIVE! What does a Google Talent Solution client have to do to make this search available? In the words of Google’s GTM man Tarquin Clark – “The answer is nothing. It just works!” Now THAT is exactly how an API should roll… Giving military veterans better job search is pretty awesome. After 20 years in the military myself and attempts to solve this exact puzzle, I’m happy to see Google in the game. But there is a bigger scheme here. Remember Job Search isn’t the only BIG API Google Talent Solution is swinging around. Imagine Google Talent Solution’s candidate search matching veteran profiles to reqs. Could that ability pop-up into Hire by Google anytime soon? Not too mention this new capability was launched without Google clients needing to lift a finger. No bullshit updates or launch schedule, “it just works”… Last but never least Google for Jobs now ALSO has this military veteran search capability… We keep hearing the Talent Solution APIs and Search initiatives are not under the same umbrella, but it kinda feels like they are… If you’re intrigued as much as I am don’t miss this week’s Chad and Cheese podcast dropping Friday – We’ll be talking in depth on all of these Googley points and more! Is BING taking a page out of the Google’s Job Search playbook? KRT Marketing provided Chad & Cheese a screen shot of a Google for Jobs style Search Engine Results Page on BING, and get this… Jobs are solely powered by LinkedIn… What? Yea, it looks for now that only LinkedIn jobs will be playing in this BING for Jobs sandbox kids. What kind of impact will this have? Bing has approximately 1.2 billion unique global visitors/month Based on research KRT provided us here at Chad & Cheese Global HQ, during the last 12 months in the US, Google has 86% market share and Bing is at 7.5%. Globally, Google is at 90% and Bing takes 3%… The big question, what if all search engines start providing job search? How will that impact the way we advertise, or as a vendor serve our clients? To understand more about Google for Jobs and this scenario check out the Recorded webinar on chadcheese.com entitled Google for Jobs – What you need to know… Pulled together by our friends at ukRecruiter – Gotta love a little Chad and Louise joint on camera, with a drive-by Stephen O’Donnell. Thanks to Mona Tawakali – TA-WA-KALI high priestess of recruiting over at KRT for the screenshot and search intel. Mona. you. are. the. bomb! IMPORTANT NOTE: I was not able to personally recreate Mona’s magic on BING, which means the model is probably in beta. No worries, Chad & Cheese will continue watching this space and encourage all of our listeners to do the same – we’re better together. Employment branding is a hot trend. While most think of Glassdoor or Indeed when the topic of anonymous employee reviews comes up, there’s an entire universe of platforms hoping to help employers improve their reputation, both nationally and globally. European-based kununu is one such offering, and we sat down with CMO Dan Sirk at a recent SHRM conference to learn more about the growing landscape.
Money keeps flowing. Perkspot, ClearCompany and iCIMS all rang the cash register this week. Upwork went full-on Enterprise. Indeed’s parent company says they have the numbers to make Google for Jobs nervous and Smashfly introduces us to Emerson. Big fun! Visit our sponsors, because, money … Sovren, JobAdX and America’s Job Exchange rock tha hizzy (do kids still say hizzy?).
Hey kids, it’s The Shred for August 18, 2018, brought to you by Judge.com. Whether you’re moving your systems to the cloud, building out a team for your next project, finding healthcare talent for your organization, filling that mission critical direct hire to lead your team, or training your employees on the latest technology, Judge.com can deliver to ensure your organization’s long-term growth. To the news: More money is flowing into the recruiting technology space. Popular ATS iCIMS announced a new round of private equity funding this week. Terms were undisclosed, but it’s safe to say this wasn’t chump change. iCIMS has raised about $92 million prior to this round, so I’m guessing the stake was in the tens of millions ballpark. By the way, if you haven’t heard our interview with iCIMS CEO Colin Day, I encourage you to do so. Dude’s very transparent and pull no punches. CareerBuilder has a new SVP of staffing and recruiting group, Andrew Streiter. Loyal listeners might remember president Kyle Braun exited CareerBuilder earlier this summer, so maybe this fills that void. Streiter joined CareerBuilder in 2005 as an account executive in New York and has held key leadership roles in sales ever since. Lastly, BirddogHR, an ATS primarily for the construction business raised some money. They didn’t disclose how much, and I don’t know much about the company, but it seemed worthy of a mention, so, there you go. BirddogHR for the win. Be sure to tune into the weekly show for deeper opinion on news you hear on The Shred. Once again, thanks to our sponsor Judge.com. The guy behind Techies.com and Jobs2Web has a startup called ZAPinfo hoping to disrupt the sourcing scene. What do Chad & Cheese think? Gotta listen to this Talroo exclusive.
Hey kids, it’s The Shred for August 14, 2018, brought to you by Judge.com. Whether you’re moving your systems to the cloud, building out a team for your next project, finding healthcare talent for your organization, filling that mission critical direct hire to lead your team, or training your employees on the latest technology, Judge.com can deliver to ensure your organization’s long-term growth. To the news: Money is flowing. Last week, Chicago-based PerkSpot raised $50 million. It’s the first time the company has raised money since being founded in 2006 as a home-based business. The company works with merchants to offer freebies and discounts to companies and their employees. The warm-and-fuzzy space is hot right now. Millennials are almost at a point where they expect perks from employers. And with competitors like Fond, Bonusly and Corporate Perks duking it out for marketshare, I suspect more money and startups in the months and years to come. Also making it rain, Boston-based ClearCompany announced a $60 million round of funding today – also its first raise since launching over a decade ago. The company says it’s “the leading recruiting and talent management software solution that helps companies identify, hire and engage more A Players.” Stop me if you’ve heard that one before. Andre Lavoie, CEO and Co-Founder of ClearCompany said the investment will “allow us to continue to hire the best people and maintain our position as the industry growth leader and innovator in talent software.” Be sure to tune into the weekly show for deeper opinion on news you hear on The Shred. It was another busy week. Rumors have Google adding searches to an unusual place, Dice reports earnings and CareerBuilder is abandoning its post downtown Chicago digs for a much smaller one. Enjoy, and support our awesome sponsors, America’s Job Exchange, Sovren and JobAdX.
Hey kids, it’s The Shred for Aug. 8, 2018, brought to you by Judge.com. Whether you’re moving your systems to the cloud, building out a team for your next project, finding healthcare talent for your organization, filling that mission critical direct hire to lead your team, or training your employees on the latest technology, Judge.com can deliver to ensure your organization’s long-term growth. To the news: DHI Group, the parent company for Dice, ClearanceJobs and eFinancialCareers reported earnings from Q2 last week. Earnings per share of 5 cents were in line with estimates, but revenue of $39.7 million, a 2.3 percent decrease from last year, missed by $570,000. Notably, Dice earnings of $23.5 million were an 8 percent decline year-over-year. New CEO Art Zeile noted a need to retain clients as well as doing a better job of keeping up with technology to remedy the company’s woes. In the earnings call, he was optimistic, saying “Although competitive pressures are high, market conditions support a business model based on a specialized offering for technology professionals, which plays to our strengths. We are moving aggressively to streamline our business in order to capitalize on this opportunity. We are also carefully managing our profitability and have a strong balance sheet. We are confident that the combination of these factors will enable DHI to deliver superior value to its shareholders over the long term.” In rebranding news, WebClipDrop, founded by Doug Berg, the guy who brought you Techies.com and Jobs2Web, is now ZAPinfo. Berg says the new name better reflects the product and helps solve the problem of prospects for getting WebDropClip … or is that DropClipWeb … you get the idea. The company also raised $1.25 million in a seed round that was a mix of institutional money and angels. Lastly, Crain’s Chicago is reporting CareerBuilder headquarters is downsizing, moving the company out of its 162,000 square foot downtown digs for a 100,000 square foot space west of the city. Ahh, CareerBuilder, the gift that keeps on giving. Once again, thanks to our sponsor Judge.com. Another Nexxt exclusive, this month the boys have a chat with Bullhorn’s CMO Gordon Burns about the current state of marketing in the recruitment space on the heels of their annual survey. Notably, the guys dig into the most popular (and unpopular) strategies being deployed by firms around the world. Spoiler alert: Job boards are in trouble. Enjoy, and be sure to visit Nexxt … there’s no show without sponsors like them.
Searching it hard. You have to type words and push Enter. Nobody has time for that, which must be the reason why Facebook and Google are making life more tolerable for recruiters by just serving up perfect candidates without all that searchings stuff. The boys discuss. Plus, Upwork is down wit’ IPO, McDonald’s order-takers are a dying breed and Indeed is putting babies in bathrobes. Huh? You gotta listen … and show our sponsors – America’s Job Exchange, Sovren and JobAdX – some big love!
It’s The Shred – a mini-Chad and Cheese bite of Breaking News — This is Chad Sowash The Shred is brought to you by The Judge Group… Who is this Judge Group I keep hearing about? Well, Judge has over 48 years of experience and success in recruiting talent – namely IT and Healthcare talent. If you need Healthcare or IT professionals go to Judge.com and tell them Chad & Cheese sent you — Judge.com — I love that domain Google drops another bomb on the recruitment tech space Last week The Google Cloud Team made some intriguing announcements at their Next ’18 Conference… Announcement #1 Google’s Jobs API is now open to everyone!! That’s right kids the Google Job Search buffet line is open! And this is great because we’ve heard stories about the success of Google’s Cloud Job Discovery – it’s obviously NOT due to Google’s marketing and product naming prowess, but purely due to Google’s amazing ability to kick machine learning and AI — square in the ass. Now YOU can have great job search like Johnson and Johnson who is touting a 41% increase in qualified candidates applying to hard-to-fill positions like scientist positions HOLY SHIT are you kidding me? — or how about CareerBuilder who has developed recruiting technology for over a decade and pretty much said “Screw this job search stuff — Google’s does it better” What does that mean for all of you vendors out there? Well, I’d start breathing deeply into a paper bag because EVERY EMPLOYER KNOWN TO HUMANKIND will be asking for your product to include Google Job Search. Announcement #2 The wasckly wabbits over at Google Cloud just launched a new product name for their recruiting API services — Say goodbye to Cloud Jobs Discovery – that name sucked anyway… Say Hello to Cloud Talent Solution… Seriously Google? That’s the best you got?!? Why a new name anyway? It’s a necessity since ANNOUNCEMENT #3 happened… a NEW CANDIDATE SEARCH API was launched. That’s right kids Google isn’t only going to outperform your job search, they’re going to embed their candidate search in candidate profile / resume db everywhere! So grab that paper bag and start breathing in and out slowly because on this Friday’s episode of Chad & Cheese HR’s Most Dangerous Podcast we’re going to answer questions like: What kind of stats will Google be sharing? We’ll give them to ya! How good can this candidate search be anyway? When will Google go the next step and provide candidate matching? Is Indeed finally going to play ball? What should Employers and Vendors do? Does this heightened candidate search kill Boolean strings? Will Careerbuilder just replace their logo with Google’s? Chad was talking about the possibility of this new API last year… Why is Chad always right? All that and more comin’ to you on this week’s Chad & Cheese Podcast… Big thanks to Judge for supporting The Shred – The Judge Group People Powered Business Solutions – Judging people since 1970… and if you haven’t been Judged and you need Healthcare and IT professionals — what the hell are you waiting for? Hey kids, it’s The Shred for July 27, 2018, brought to you by Judge.com. Whether you’re moving your systems to the cloud, building out a team for your next project, finding healthcare talent for your organization, filling that mission critical direct hire to lead your team, or training your employees on the latest technology, Judge.com can deliver to ensure your organization’s long-term growth. To the news: Freelance gig marketplace Upwork confidentially filed for IPO this week, according to Recode; Upwork, as many remember is the product of a 2013 merger of Elance and oDesk; the company has raised $169M to date, according to Crunchbase. Will you be a buyer? Now to Facebook, at this week’s Jobg8 conference, industry insider Matt Charney revealed in a keynote address that the social network is testing a candidate matching feature. Details were sparse, but it looks like once a job is posted, Facebook recommends users across its entire network who fit the job requirements. No news on what the algorithm looks like at this point – for example, does it only show candidates within a certain geotarget – but an official release should be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Sticking with Facebook, they acquired communications tool Redkix this week. Redkix lets companies manage chat, email, groups, and more within Slack-like channels; the service will shut down and the technology will be rolled into Facebook’s Slack wannabe Workplace. Redkix had raised $17M to date. Now to Google, Big G announced this week that it was launching profile search in private beta. The new technology enables recruiters and sourcers to discover talent in their existing candidate databases. So, if you’re keeping score at home, LinkedIn, Facebook and now Google are officially in the candidate matching game. As usual, we’ll be sure to discuss the news in greater depth on the weekly show, so be sure to tune-in. Once again, thanks to our sponsor Judge.com. It’s The Shred – a mini-Chad and Cheese bite of Breaking News — This is Chad Sowash The Shred is brought to you by The Judge Group… What exactly is The Judge Group, well Judge has over 48 years of experience and success in recruiting talent – namely IT and Healthcare talent. If you need Healthcare or IT professionals go to Judge.com and tell them Chad & Cheese sent you — Judge.com — I love that domain On to the NEWS… Pivots can’t save everyone… Snag – aka Snagajob – the hourly hiring platform just outsed their CEO Peter Harrison. Why? Well, pull up some Glassdoor reviews and that might start to answer the question of Harrison’s kick to the curb. Harrison’s 41 percent CEO approval rating – which sucks btw – and most of the negative reviews focus on a lack of leadership – never a good thing for a CEO. Not too mention in 2016 then Snagajob’s landscape changed immensely with an infusion of an additional $100m investment, now the cash wasn’t the biggest change rather.. that cash shifted control to outside investment firms. Ohhhh NELLY! And also remember Snag’s sweetspot is the SMB market and with Zip killing it, LinkedIn licking their chops and Facebook – yea Facebook joining the party it’s getting more than competitve at the SMB party! Who will be the new face of Snag? Fabio Rosati of Upwork fame – you know the freelance job site that accrued 14 million users in 180 countries and more than $1 billion in annual billings. Yea that Fabio Rosati… But will Fabio be enough to get the SMB platform through the competition and the new Uber-like hourly start-ups? Who knows but it’s gonna to be fun watching… NEXXT >>>>>> Microsoft is going to drink Slack’s milkshake — Yes There will be blood Slack a business communication and productivity platform has to defend it’s flank from Microsoft Teams a competitor to Slack who has just launched a FREE version. According to Quartz… The new free Microsoft Teams platform is aimed at small and medium-size businesses. It’ll be free for an organization’s first 300 users, and each user will be given 2 GB of storage, along with 10 GB that the team can share. This news should send Slackers into a panic… Teams is integrated with the Microsoft suite and are targeting Slack. Joel and I always talk about who will acquire Slack… Well, Microsoft isn’t in the market to acquire Slack who has $790m in funding, they want to kill them, but what about Google? In more acquisition news, Slack acquired Denver-based enterprise software startup Missions this week; terms were undisclosed; Missions enables businesses to customize Slack with additional features; the team will work in Slack’s Denver offices; members will continue in their current assignments; Slack has raised $790M to date. Next up, listeners will remember iCIMS acquired TextRecruit earlier this year. Well not to be outdone, Jobvite has announced a partnership with TextRecruit competitor Canvas to provide text recruiting solutions for its users. “This latest update to the Jobvite platform offers recruiters a must-have solution to engage candidates and immediately start a conversation, on their terms, within seconds,” said Jobvite Chief Product Officer, Robert Tsao. “With this new functionality, hiring teams can provide jobseekers with instant access to resources, eliminate time spent waiting for responses, and easily stay in touch over time in order to build lasting, authentic relationships.” As usual, we’ll be sure to discuss the news in greater depth on the weekly show, so be sure to tune-in.
