Published in 1987, it is the third novel in the <a href="https://discworld.fandom.com/wiki/Discworld">Discworld</a> series and the first in which the main character is not <a href="https://discworld.fandom.com/wiki/Rincewind">Rincewind</a>. It introduces the character of <a href="https://discworld.fandom.com/wiki/Esmerelda_Weatherwax">Granny Weatherwax</a>, who reappears in several later Discworld novels.</p>
