Monroe Edwards was one of the most notorious figures in early Texas history. He was an illegal slave trader, con artist, and the central figure in a sensational 1842 trial that captured national attention. Edwards smuggled hundreds of captive Africans into Brazoria County during the 1830s and sold them off to other plantation owners in the area.
